Shoplifting is America's number one property crime. More than 500,000 shoplifting incidents occur everyday and $13 billion worth of goods are stolen a year. It is estimated that 10% of the US's population are shoplifters. 
The cities listed are ranked highest in shoplifting and have a common theme of being large cities with easy escape routes:

Most common items stolen are:
  1. Groceries (cigarettes, energy drinks, lottery, gum, and infant formula)
  2. Cosmetics (Electronic toothbrushes, creams, pregnancy tests, etc.)
  3. Electronics (GPS devices, laptops, monitors, CD players, etc.)
  4. Clothing (Jeans, shoes, designer clothing and handbags)
Hiding merchandise is the most common method of shoplifting. The following are the most common ways to shoplift:
  1. Umbrellas: items can easily be dropped into umbrellas 
  2. Baby strollers: baby strollers usually have items that stolen items can easily b be hidden under such as blankets and toys
  3. Large coats: a professional shoplifter can cut slits into the coat so they can reach for items without being seen
  4. Shopping bags: shoplifters will bring a grocery bag from another store and fill it up with items that are already in the bag
